Share

The City Council on Monday approved a pilot anti-drug program for fifth- and sixth-grade students at a school in the Montebello Unified School District.

The program is patterned after the successful Drug Abuse Resistance Education program pioneered by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Under the yearlong pilot program, scheduled to begin in the fall, one officer will spend two days at the school each week for 34 weeks, said Capt. Steve Simonian. The school that will host the program has not been selected.

The Police Department and school district are seeking state grants and other funding to pay for the program, which will cost about $24,000 for two semesters.

“If it’s successful, it will be continued,” Simonian said.
