Lynwood : Teachers Sought in Spain
Due to shortage of bilingual Spanish and English teachers, the Lynwood Unified School District Board of Education will be recruiting instructors from Spain.
The board has asked the state Department of Education to recruit six qualified bilingual Spanish-speaking teachers from Spain, said LaVoneia Steele, district superintendent.
“Because our universities are not turning out enough bilingual teachers, the state department started recruiting from foreign countries more than a year ago,” said Steele.
More than 65% of the 12,800 students in the district are Latino, Steele said. According to a recent state Department of Education report, Lynwood had more than 3,000 Spanish-speaking students who speak limited English.
