Jacumba
A Lakeside man was killed and an Imperial Beach man was seriously injured Wednesday when a vehicle going the wrong way along Interstate 8 in eastern San Diego County crashed head-on into another vehicle, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol said alcohol may have been involved in the crash, but officials offered no elaboration.
The dead man was identified as William Enarson, 26, of Lakeside. The highway patrol said he was driving the car that was headed the wrong way.
Injured in the accident was Frederick Baker, 23, of Imperial Beach, who was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition with multiple injuries.
Baker was driving east on Interstate 8 about 2:30 p.m. when he saw Enarson’s car approaching him heading westbound, authorities said. Enarson’s car was traveling at about 70 m.p.h., officials said.
Although both vehicles swerved to avoid a collision, they crashed head-on about 3 miles east of Jacumba, said the highway patrol, which is investigating the accident. There were no passengers in either car, authorities said.
