Entertainer Cruz Infante, son of the legendary Mexican film star and singer Pedro Infante, died in a car crash late Monday, Mexico City police said Wednesday.

Infante, 36, was killed with his wife, his half brother and their driver when their car collided head-on with a bus while they were traveling to Islas in the central coastal state of Veracruz, 100 miles southeast of Mexico City, officials said.

Eager to make a name of his own, Infante began his singing career at age 12, using the name Pedro Suarez. After achieving success, he revealed his parentage and began using his family name several years ago.

Pedro Infante, considered Mexico’s most beloved screen idol, died 30 years ago last month in an air crash.

Cruz Infante made four films, recorded six albums and appeared on television and at state fairs in Mexico. He also toured the United States and in 1983 participated in Los Angeles ceremonies renaming Euclid Place as Pedro Infante Street.
