The director of the Museum of the American Indian should resign for proposing to move the museum to Washington, Sen. Alfonse D’Amato (R-N.Y.) said Saturday. “Dr. (Roland) Force is simply not operating in good faith,” D’Amato said at a news conference. “He has turned down reasonable efforts to keep the museum in New York.” D’Amato criticized Force for trying to affiliate the museum with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and said he had overlooked reasonable offers in New York City, including an offer to affiliate with the Museum of Natural History. Force was unavailable for comment. The Smithsonian Museum’s board of directors voted last week to pursue Force’s proposal. Dallas billionaire H. Ross Perot--who initially offered $70 million to move the museum to Dallas--may provide the funds for the transfer.
