The State : Houseboat Tips; Two Die
A houseboat capsized in the San Joaquin River near Antioch, killing two of the five people aboard, the Coast Guard reported. One of the victims was identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as Ladean Kathryn Pitkins, 34, of Antioch. Identity of the other, a girl about 6 years old, was withheld pending notification of relatives. All five people on the 22-foot pleasure craft were plunged into the water when the boat tipped over. Three of the victims were quickly rescued from the chilly waters, Lt. Dan McClellan of the Coast Guard said. The two victims apparently were trapped in the boat, and their bodies were not recovered by Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department divers until more than an hour after the accident. Cause of the accident was under investigation. A small-craft advisory was in effect at the time for gusty winds.
