A painting by the American artist John James Audubon, discovered in Fort Worth, Tex., three years ago after being “lost” for 160 years, will be auctioned this week at Sotheby’s auction house in New York. The painting, entitled “A Pair of Boat-Tailed Grackles,” is expected to sell for $200,000 to $300,000. Fort Worth artists Scott and Stuart Gentling, 44-year-old twin brothers, found the painting and bought it for $18,000 in Philadelphia in December, 1984. The proceeds will go to finance the printing of their “Of Birds and Texas,” a massive 46-pound, 22-by-28-inch book influenced by Audubon’s seminal “Birds of America.” Their book is dedicated to Audubon.
