A woman found four live artillery shells while digging in her garden, and a veteran of the Police Department’s explosives division just 45 days away from retirement disarmed them, officials said.

Inspector Ken King of the San Francisco Police Department said the elderly woman, who was not identified, found one 5-inch shell and three 3-inch shells in her garden Sunday.

“She was just doing some gardening out there and unearthed these things,” he said. “They were in very unstable condition, as they tend to get with age.”

King said Sgt. Robert Hankins, who is preparing to retire, deactivated the shells.

King said he does not know how the shells, which apparently were left over from World War II or the Korean War, got there in the first place.
