Three Georgia O’Keeffe original paintings will be given to the Rhode Island School of Design to end a dispute over the estate of the late artist’s sister, state government officials announced Tuesday. The paintings will be chosen from among 15 owned by the Robert R. Young Foundation, which was named for the husband of Anita O’Keeffe Young, the painter’s sister, said Tom Connell, a spokesman for the Rhode Island attorney general’s office. Mrs. Young left an art collection to the foundation when she died in 1985. Her will stipulated that the works were to be given to museums for display, but the foundation maintained it could sell the paintings and donate the proceeds to charity. The attorney general’s settlement calls for two other paintings to be displayed at other museums in New England; the rest will be auctioned, with 5% of the proceeds given to Rhode Island charities.
