About 1,200 gallons of raw sewage spilled into San Diego Bay early Monday after a blocked sewer line overflowed into a storm drain that empties into the bay, county health service officials reported.

Accumulated grease and debris was cited as the culprit of the blocked line that poured out of a manhole and into the storm drain at the southern end of Canon Street in Point Loma. A city utilities crew contained the flow two hours after it began.

As a precautionary measure, San Diego Bay has been closed for 100 yards on each side of the spill in the 1100 block of Anchorage Lane near the San Diego Yacht Club. The affected area will remain closed while county health technicians conduct tests to determine when the water quality will be safe again.
