Forty-one people were killed statewide in Memorial Day weekend highway accidents, the California Highway Patrol reported. CHP spokesman Kent Milton noted that there were 52 traffic fatalities during the same 78-hour period a year ago. He attributed this year’s lower death rate to an increased number of drunk driving arrests. A total of 2,691 motorists were arrested during this three-day holiday weekend, compared to 2,418 last year.
