Gov. George Deukmejian today signed into law a bill to raise the speed limit to 65 m.p.h. on more than 1,200 miles of rural highways, including virtually all of Interstate 5 between Bakersfield and the Oregon line.

The state Transportation Department, Caltrans, immediately began posting new speed limit signs throughout the state. Although the bill contains an urgency clause and takes effect immediately, motorists will be required to continue to drive at a maximum of 55 m.p.h. until the new signs are posted, which is expected to take at least three weeks.
