An air pollution study commissioned by the Environmental Protection Agency has found that San Jose has the highest levels of air pollutants in the San Francisco Bay Area. The study reported that up to 57 deaths and more than 4,000 hospital emergency room trips could be prevented annually if Santa Clara County brought its pollution levels into compliance with state standards. Although significantly lower than Los Angeles County, pollution levels in the San Jose area were reported to be similar to those in New York City. The study said the primary cause of San Jose’s pollution is motor vehicle emissions.
