A safety group has asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall 50,000 school buses manufactured by Thomas Built since 1977, saying they have defective bodies that split open in crashes. The floors of the school buses separated in three accidents that killed six children and injured 45, the Center for Auto Safety said in a petition. Since 1977, federal regulations have required upgraded structural integrity of school buses. The center said the Thomas Built buses are not up to the federal standards.
