Long Beach : Rezoning to Limit Density

To avoid overdevelopment in an area known as Lakewood Village, the City Council on Tuesday gave initial approval to a rezoning ordinance. The new law, which the council expects to adopt next week, would allow a maximum of four residential units per lot on properties fronting the east side of Lakewood Boulevard between Del Amo Boulevard and Norse Way.

The ordinance also would rezone the southeast corner of Parkcrest Street and Woodruff Avenue to prohibit residential use. Although the area is now zoned to allow retail, commercial, office and residential use, no homes have been built there. And residents of the adjacent neighborhood want to keep it that way, city officials said.

In a related matter, the council gave initial approval to a rezoning ordinance intended to prevent dense multifamily residential development in areas west of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and south of Hill Street, which are predominantly developed with single-family and two-family dwellings.
