Football player Derrick Fenner of the University of North Carolina, charged Tuesday in Upper Marlboro, Md., with first-degree murder in a drug-related shooting, had been arrested in April for cocaine possession, authorities said.
Fenner, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading rusher last season, is being held without bond in Prince George’s County, Md., after turning himself in to Hyattsville city police.
Fenner, 20, a sophomore with a history of academic troubles at Chapel Hill, N.C., was arrested in nearby Clinton, N.C., April 9 after police searched the truck he was driving, according to court records. Officers found 25 vials of a white substance in Fenner’s jacket pocket and a .38 caliber revolver and ammunition under the seat.
Fenner was charged with cocaine possession and illegally transporting a handgun, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 4.
