Five baseball players from Westside universities were named to the NCAA All-District 8 team. Selections included shortstop Paul Faries, outfielder Rick Hirtensteiner and designated hitter Ruben Gonzalez, all of Pepperdine; UCLA second baseman Torey Lovullo and Bruin catcher Billy Haselman and Loyola Marymount third baseman Chris Donnels.

Steve Lewis of American High School in Fremont, defending state champion in the 400-meter run, and Kamy Keshmiri of Reno (Nevada) High School, who holds the national prep record in the discus with a throw of 224-3, have signed national letters of intent with UCLA.

Three soccer players on UCLA’s varsity last season were named to All-Western Soccer Alliance teams. Goalkeeper Anton Nistl of the San Diego Nomads was a first-team selection, and second-team selections included defender Eric Biefeld of the Los Angeles Heat and San Diego midfielder Steve Black.

A-flight winners in recent tournaments of the Penmar Men’s Golf Club include Jack Boyer and Jay Pittman in match play, Bob Gotthoffer with a 79 for 18 holes in a tournament played at Camarillo Springs, Bill Sharman with a nine-hole gross of 35 in the 4-wood Williams Invitational and Jack Boyer with a nine-hole gross of 33 at Penmar.
