Jack Clark, who earlier this week was robbed of two home runs on outstanding catches by Eric Davis in Cincinnati, hit a two-run homer deep into the left-center-field bleachers in the first inning Thursday to spark the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Cubs at Chicago.

Clark’s homer, on a 3-and-2 pitch with two out, helped make a loser of Greg Maddux (4-5) and a winner of Danny Cox (6-2). The latter needed eighth-inning help from Todd Worrell, who picked up his 12th save.

Atlanta 8, Pittsburgh 3--Dale Murphy and Andres Thomas each hit home runs in a four-run first inning, helping the Braves subdue the Pirates at Atlanta.

Montreal 8, San Diego 5--Tim Wallach hit a three-run homer, and Hubie Brooks added a two-run shot as the Expos completed a three-game sweep of the Padres at Montreal.

Vance Law’s sacrifice fly broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning, and Wallach hit his seventh home run in the seventh.

Floyd Youmans (4-3) gave up 4 runs on 10 hits in 7 innings. He struck out 9 and walked 3. Randy St. Claire, who got the final two outs, earned his sixth save.
