A Hayward man has pleaded innocent in Municipal Court to a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge that police said involved a bite out of an apple. Investigators said the defendant, Jesse S. Macias, 48, told them he was eating an apple and momentarily took his eyes off the road when a car he was driving struck and killed 63-year-old Evelyn Bishop in February. Police said Macias had not been speeding, nor was he under the influence of drugs or alcohol--just the apple.
