Duncan Injured in Spill at Second, Taken to the Hospital for Observation

Dodger shortstop Mariano Duncan suffered a bruised left hip after falling on his back while trying to complete a double play in the seventh inning of the Dodgers’ 6-3 win over the Atlanta Braves Monday night.

The Dodgers list Duncan’s playing status as day-to-day.

Duncan, who was motionless on his side in front of second base for a few minutes after being taken out of the play by runner Gerald Perry, was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to a local hospital for tests. Charlie Strasser, assistant Dodger trainer, said that at no time did Duncan lose feeling in his limbs.

A Dodger spokesman said X-rays on Duncan’s back, which originally was what believed to be injured in the spill, were negative. The Dodgers said the pain Duncan had complained about in his back was “radiated from the pain in his left hip.”

Duncan was kept at Piedmont Hospital overnight, and the Dodgers said he is expected to be released this morning.
