The Board of Port Commissioners on Tuesday endorsed a bid by the San Diego Assn. of Governments for federal funding to study alternatives to Lindbergh Field as the area’s major airport.

The much-studied issue was revived recently by the San Diego City Council while discussing a request by Coronado to annex North Island Naval Air Station, part of which lies within the San Diego city limits. Previous studies have concluded that Lindbergh Field will continue as the area’s major airport because of mountainous terrain near Brown Field and the Navy’s refusal to consider joint operations at either North Island or Miramar Naval Air Station.

“I realize that past studies have produced no visible results, but perhaps this one will,” Commissioner Milford Portwood said.
