Bill Would Hike Legislators’ Pay

State legislative salaries would go up 10%, from $37,105 to $40,816 a year, starting after the 1988 general election, under legislation introduced on Tuesday by Assemblyman Tom Bane (D-Tarzana).

A 1966 ballot proposition approved by the voters gave the lawmakers the right to raise their own salaries up to 5% annually. Bane’s bill amounts to two years’ salary increase, because the lawmakers’ previous raise took effect in 1986.

Some members, including Bane, the chairman of the Rules Committee, complain that the limit has prevented legislative salaries from keeping pace with the cost of living.

In addition to their salary, lawmakers receive a $75-per-day tax-free allowance for living expenses.
