Torrance : Appointment Confirmed

Sam Schauerman, El Camino College’s vice president of instruction, was formally named president-superintendent of the 25,000-student community college Monday by a 4-1 vote of college trustees. Schauerman’s selection to succeed President Rafael L. Cortada was announced last week. He will be paid $84,000 a year.
Although Schauerman’s promotion will not be official until Aug. 22, he will begin his new duties July 3. Cortada will leave July 1 because of accumulated vacation time and will become president of the University of the District of Columbia in August.
The vote against Schauerman’s appointment came from Trustee Gerald Hilby, who said he favored another El Camino vice president, John Renley. Renley and Schauerman were the only finalists for the job from the college.
Schauerman, who was born in Colorado, received his doctorate in education from UCLA and taught math in Colorado schools before taking his first El Camino job as an administrative assistant in 1965.
