Joe Garcia, an assistant principal at El Monte High School, has been appointed president of the West San Gabriel Valley Administrators Assn. The 120-member association represents five San Gabriel-area school districts and provides support services.

Allison Parks has been appointed director of the Occidental College Reading Clinic. Parks received an undergraduate degree from UCLA and a graduate degree from Occidental College in Eagle Rock. Parks previously served as an elementary school teacher in the Glendale Unified School District, where she also developed reading programs. Parks replaces Rae McCormick, who has joined the education department.

James E. Olson, chairman and chief executive officer of American Telephone & Telegraph, has been named to the Caltech Board of Trustees. Olson, 61, graduated from the University of North Dakota and lives in New Jersey.

Jean Paul Revel, the Albert Billings Ruddock professor of biology at Caltech, has been named to the National Advisory Research Resources Council of the National Institutes of Health. The 18-member council advises the institute’s research division on human health research and reviews grant applications.

John F. Hotchkis and Barry M. Connell, both of Pasadena, have been reelected to the board of directors of Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles.

Francisco Bolanos, a graduating senior at Don Bosco Technical Institute in Rosemead, has been awarded a $3,000 career development grant from Southern California Edison. Bolanos will use the grant to attend Cal Poly Pomona in the fall.

Robert Henigson has been named president of Caltech Associates, a support group. Henigson previously served as vice president and has been a member for 11 years. Henigson graduated from Caltech in 1949 and from Harvard Law School in 1955. Henigson succeeds Richard Hayman. Joanna Muir and J. Howard Marshall III were named vice presidents. The associates was formed in 1926.

Makoto Nakayama has been appointed executive director of San Gabriel Valley Medical Center. Nakayama of Gardena previously served as assistant administrator of professional services and program development.

Cal State Los Angeles chemistry professor Hendrik Keyzer has been named Outstanding Professor of the California State University system for 1987. Keyzer of San Gabriel has conducted extensive research in bioelectrochemistry and organic semiconductors. Keyzer has taught at Cal State Los Angeles for 20 years. He received his undergraduate degree and doctorate from the University of New South Wales in Australia.

George E. Yasutake of Pasadena has been elected to a two-year term on the California Pharmacists Assn. Board of Trustees. Yasutake is a pharmacist at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.

R. Scott Jenkins, a partner in the Pasadena law firm of Hahn & Hahn, has been elected president of the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank Board of Directors. The food bank is a private, nonprofit organization that solicits donations of surplus food from the food industry for hungry and needy people through charitable organizations in Los Angeles County. Jenkins lives in Pasadena.

Gene Broadwell and Gary Leal, both of Caltech, have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Broadwell, a senior scientist in aeronautics and applied science, was elected for his contributions in the area of chemical laser design. Leal, the Chevron Professor of Chemical Engineering at Caltech, was elected for his molecular investigations. Broadwell received an undergraduate degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, a graduate degree from Caltech and a doctorate from the University of Michigan. He lives in Pasadena. Leal received an undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and graduate and doctorate degrees from Stanford University. Leal lives at Lake Arrowhead.

John H. Seinfeld, a chemical engineering professor at Caltech, has been awarded the 1987 George Westinghouse Award of the American Society for Engineering Education. Seinfeld is credited with developing the mathematical models of air pollution that are used by the state of California and the U.S. Environment Protection Agency. Seinfeld has conducted extensive research in air pollution and aerosol use. He has taught at Caltech for 20 years. The award includes a $5,000 grant and certificate.

John E. Rieckewald has been selected as principal of Glen A. Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights. Rieckewald has been employed by the district for 16 years. He received an undergraduate degree from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, a graduate degree from USC, a teaching credential from Point Loma College, an administrative credential from Cal State Fullerton and a doctorate from Claremont Graduate School.

Dr. Arthur G. Madorsky , an internal medicine and sports medicine specialist, has been elected to the College of Osteopathic Medicine Board of Directors. Madorsky, of Claremont, serves as medical consultant at Harvey Mudd College and General Dynamics Corp.
