Bernardi to Provide Funds to Fight Drugs

Share

Los Angeles City Councilman Ernani Bernardi won council approval Wednesday to spend $70,000 from his office budget to fight drug dealing and burglaries in his northeast San Fernando Valley district.

Most of money will pay overtime wages for a small squad of officers targeting street narcotics sales in San Fernando Gardens, Van Nuys Pierce Apartments in Pacoima and the Astoria Gardens in Sylmar.

Part of the money also will finance a car with two officers to combat burglaries in Sylmar. Some money also will go to print pamphlets discouraging the shooting of firearms on the Fourth of July.

Police expect the $70,000 to last eight to 10 weeks.

Each of the 15 council members receives about $550,000 a year for office operations, most of which goes to staff salaries.

Bernardi has previously used leftover office budget funds to pay for crime-fighting programs in his district.
