Underground storage tanks at the Crown Coach Corp. property in Chino have leaked cancer-causing contaminants into a ground-water well 70 feet below the earth’s surface, but city and county officials say drinking water remains safe. Jennifer Campbell of the San Bernardino County Environmental Health Services Agency said soil-water tests taken in late April showed that toluene, trichlorethene, tetrachlorethene, dichlorethene, methylene chloride and methyl chloroform had leaked from 11 storage tanks. Methylene chloride is known to cause cancer and methyl chloroform is a suspected carcinogen. But local officials said drinking water supplies are not threatened because only a second, deeper well that is not contaminated supplies potable water.
