A Croatian nationalist sentenced to life imprisonment in 1971 for the murder of Yugoslavia’s ambassador in Stockholm will be released in December, the Swedish parole authority said Friday.

The Correctional Board said that Miro Baresic, found guilty of the 1971 shooting death of Ambassador Vladimir Rolovic, will be placed on three years’ probation after his release.

The Yugoslavian government has quietly opposed Baresic’s pleas for early release, but Swedish authorities, who reduced his sentence to 18 years from life in 1985, said they were exercising their discretion to release prisoners after they have served at least half their jail terms.
