The number of physicians in California has increased faster than the general population, headed by an upsurge in women doctors, according to the California Medical Assn.

It said there was one physician for every 418 residents in California during 1985, the latest year for which figures are available. The national figure is one physician for every 485 residents.

Between 1975 and 1985, California’s supply of doctors jumped by 49.3%, compared to a 22.6% population increase, the association reported. It said that during the same 10-year period, there was a near doubling in the proportion of California physicians who are women, from 7.8% to 14.2%.
