Compton Schools, Teachers Reach Tentative Accord

Share

Negotiators for the Compton Unified School District and the union that represents 1,400 teachers have reached a tentative contract settlement that could end a strike-punctuated labor dispute, officials said Saturday.

The proposed three-year pact calls for salary increases of 7% in 1987 and 5% in 1988 and a yet-to-be-determined raise in 1989, said John Burritt, a spokesman for the union, the Compton Education Assn.

Compton’s teachers, demanding salaries closer to the median for the county’s other school districts, had conducted 16 one-day walkouts since contract talks began in September, 1986. The strikes were halted by court order in March.

Teachers will be briefed on the proposed contract Monday and will vote on it Tuesday and Wednesday. Ratification by the school district’s Board of Education also is required.

The tentative agreement was reached after a session that ended at midnight Friday.
