The State : Trial Set in Liu Slaying

A South San Francisco Municipal judge ordered alleged gang member Tung Kuei-sen to stand trial in the slaying of Henry Liu, a Chinese-American writer and critic of the Taiwanese government who was gunned down in 1984. Judge Walter Harrington based his decision on testimony Tung, 34, gave last fall while testifying in a federal racketeering trial in New York, in which Tung said he killed Liu at the writer’s Daly City home on orders from the government of Taiwan. Tung said the orders came from a leader of a Taiwan-based criminal gang who had a card identifying him as an agent of Taiwan’s military intelligence bureau. Taiwanese courts have convicted the former chief of military intelligence and four others in the slaying. But because Taiwan has refused to extradite Tung’s alleged accomplices, Tung is the only person to stand trial in the United States for the killing.
