Mike Schmidt, who enjoyed one of his greatest moments ever at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, produced one of his greatest games ever Sunday in the same ballpark.

Schmidt hit 3 homers, drove in 6 runs and got his 2,000th career hit, leading the Philadelphia Phillies past the Montreal Expos, 11-6.

On the next-to-last day of the 1980 season, Schmidt hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning to clinch the National League East championship for Philadelphia and eliminate the Expos. The Phillies went on to win the National League championship series and their only World Series.

On Sunday, Schmidt tied Mel Ott for 13th place on the all-time home run list with 511.

Schmidt hit a three-run homer, his 14th of the season, in the third inning against Montreal starter Lary Sorensen (3-3) as the Phillies took a 4-0 lead. Schmidt connected for a bases-empty shot in the sixth off Curt Brown for his 2,000th hit, becoming the 153rd major league player to reach that mark.

Schmidt hit a two-run homer off Randy St. Claire during a six-run seventh that made it 11-1, and then came out of the game. If he stayed in, Schmidt would have had one shot at becoming the first player to hit four homers in a game twice.

Said Schmidt: “The condition of my ribs, the 11-1 score, and the fact that it was a day game after a night game . . . it was right that I come out of the game.”

Schmidt returned to the lineup last Wednesday after being on the disabled list since May 26 with a strained muscle beneath his rib cage.

St. Louis 3, Chicago 2--Danny Cox gave up five hits in 8 innings as the Cardinals beat the Cubs at St. Louis and extended their lead in the East to six games.

Cox (7-3), who struck out six and walked three, left in the ninth after a leadoff single by Jerry Mumphrey and a one-out walk to Leon Durham.

Todd Worrell replaced Cox and gave up Manny Trillo’s two-run single before getting his major league-leading 16th save.

Jack Clark hit a run-scoring double in the third off Scott Sanderson (3-4) for the game’s first run. Vince Coleman opened the inning with a walk, stole second and scored on Clark’s two-out hit.

New York 7, Pittsburgh 3--Darryl Strawberry hit a two-run home run, Keith Hernandez added a bases-empty homer and a run-scoring double, and Doug Sisk pitched 4 innings of scoreless relief as the Mets defeated the Pirates at Pittsburgh.

Met Manager Davey Johnson and starter John Mitchell were ejected in the third inning when Mitchell brushed back Pirate starter Brian Fisher. In the first inning, Fisher hit Tim Teufel with a pitch.

Sisk (2-1), the Mets’ third pitcher allowed only three hits in getting the win.

Hernandez gave the Mets a 1-0 lead with his eighth homer, a drive over the center-field fence to open the Mets’ four-run fourth against Fisher (2-4). Strawberry hit his 17th homer in the fifth.

Cincinnati 4, Atlanta 3--Dave Concepcion’s two-out single off Gene Garber in the eighth inning scored Barry Larkin with the winning run in the Reds’ victory at Cincinnati.

Buddy Bell drew a leadoff walk from Garber (8-4) and Larkin ran for him. Larkin moved to second on Nick Esasky’s sacrifice and scored on Concepcion’s hit.

Rob Murphy (4-2) pitched one perfect inning to earn the victory, and John Franco got his 13th save. The Reds lead the West by two games over San Francisco.

Dale Murphy extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a seventh-inning homer.

San Diego 4, San Francisco 1--Dave Dravecky pitched a five-hitter, and Carmelo Martinez knocked in a pair of runs with a double and a homer in the Padres’ victory at San Francisco.

The Padres have won three in a row for the first time since Aug. 19-21, 1986.

San Diego scored two runs off Giant starter Mark Davis (4-5) in the first inning. With two out, Martinez hit a run-scoring double to right-center and scored on a single by Shane Mack.

In the third, Martinez hit a two-out homer for the Padres’ final run. Dravecky (2-6), who shut out the Giants until the sixth, struck out six and walked two.
