Rainbows

Fran Harrison’s lament about the lack of rainbows (Letters, June 6) is, if not ludicrous, badly misdirected.

In November of last year, after a particularly violent storm, I stepped onto the porch and into the arch of the most beautiful double rainbow I have ever seen. I see at least one every year.

Blaming the lack of rainbows in Los Angeles on the existence of concrete is like a novelist blaming his writer’s block on the lack of typewriter ribbon in his machine. One has nothing to do with the other.

I suggest that Harrison shed the scales of adult mnemonic distortion and reestablish contact with her childhood ability to marvel at the wonder of all things in the world, both natural and man-made.

Rainbows do exist. She need only look around the concrete corner to find them.
