Local News in Brief : Executive Sentenced to Jail in Toxic Waste Case

Share

The chief financial officer of a North Hollywood manufacturer of Tiffany Lamps was sentenced Tuesday to 45 days in County Jail for illegally dumping hazardous wastes into an earthen pit on the firm’s premises.

Carlos A. Esparza and the company, Irma Jabali Inc., which does business as Tiffany Designs, were also sentenced in Los Angeles Superior Court to three years’ probation and ordered to pay $15,000 in criminal penalties and $6,900 in restitution to cover the costs of the investigation.

Esparza and the firm pleaded guilty last month to one felony count of illegal disposal of hazardous wastes and three misdemeanor counts of failure to store accumulated hazardous wastes.

Prosecutors said a two-year investigation determined that Esparza periodically ordered the dumping of corrosive wastes, used to provide an “antique” finish on the lamps, into a pit at the company’s manufacturing facility in North Hollywood.
