SportsScope : Surf Classic Will Start 4-Day Run

The first Leggoons Classic surfing and bodyboarding competition will be held today through Sunday at the Manhattan Beach Pier as part of the Budweiser U. S. Pro Tour of Surfing and Bodyboarding. The competition will include 128 surfers, a longboard division of 64 and 24 bodyboarders competing for $12,000 plus points in the tour standings. Competition begins at 7 a.m. each day.

Top competitors include 1986 surfing champion Mike Cruickshank of Dana Point plus local surfers Scott Daley, Ted Robinson and Kelly Gibson of Manhattan Beach and Chris Frohoff of Redondo Beach. Daley ranks third on the tour behind Mike Lambresi of Carlsbad and Richie Collins of Costa Mesa. Bodyboarders include 1986 champion Keith Sasaki, who ranks second this year behind fellow Hawaiian Mike Stewart.

Ten South Bay high school volleyball players are honored on the CIF All-Southern California volleyball teams. Eric Fonoimoana, Jeff West and Carl Henkel of 4-A runner-up Mira Costa and Dan Greenbaum of Rolling Hills were named to the 4-A first team, with Albert Hannemann of North Torrance, Bill Ortgiesen of Mira Costa and Scott Johnson of Rolling Hills on the third team. Chuck Donlon of Bishop Montgomery was named to the 3-A first team while Mike Christensen of Miraleste and Chris Miller of Redondo were named to the second team. The teams were selected by CIF coaches.

St. Bernard High, which reached the championship game of CIF 1-A baseball, is represented on the All-CIF 1-A team, placing senior pitcher Tim Williams, senior infielder Mark Holcomb and junior shortstop Royce Clayton. Williams is a repeater from last year. In the Small Schools Division, Chadwick is represented by senior pitcher Jeff Kaufman and senior infielder Keith Moore.

Three South Bay softball players received All-CIF honors from the CIF Softball Coaches Assn. Senior Malinee Chiaravanont of West Torrance was named to the 4-A second team. Senior Tiffany Carresi of Mary Star of the Sea was chosen for the 2-A first team. Junior Brandi Pilato of Miraleste was named to the 1-A second team.
