Share

The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development has selected Monrovia as one of six cities in California to receive a certificate of merit in the National Recognition Program for excellence in community development.

The Huntington Oaks Shopping Center was chosen for its innovative and effective approach to creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. HUD considered 438 projects nationwide and selected 89. Monrovia is the only California city with a population under 50,000 to be selected.

Huntington Oaks, completed in 1985, is a 29-acre, $30-million project that created 860 permanent jobs and generated more than $500,000 in new sales tax annually to the city. It has three major tenants, Mervyn’s Department Store, Builders Emporium and a Safeway market.
