Nicaraguan Indians opposed to the Sandinista government have resolved at a U.S.-funded assembly in Honduras to step up their armed struggle but may still be far from putting words into action, diplomatic sources said. Some key leadership issues were still unresolved when the weeklong talks broke up. About 1,600 representatives of the Atlantic coast Indians decided at the meeting to unite for their armed effort and agreed to a formal link with the main U.S.-backed rebel grouping, the Nicaraguan Resistance. In the past, the fiercely independent Indians have been wary of the contras, preferring to push for autonomy on their own.
