Sukova Upsets Evert in 3 Sets
Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia rallied from 2-5 in the final set and upset American Chris Evert 4-6, 6-4, 8-6 today to reach the final of the $200,000 Pilkington Glass women’s grass court tennis championships for the third consecutive year in the run-up to Wimbledon.
Sukova, seeded No. 3, will meet the winner of the other semifinal between defending champion Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver, who faced each other later in the day. Sukova, who beat Evert in their last meeting in the 1986 U.S. Open, won in 2 hours, 25 minutes.
