The championship series between the Lakers and the Boston Celtics was the highest-rated NBA Finals in history, with an average Nielsen rating of 15.9, CBS-TV announced Thursday. Each rating point represents 874,000 homes.

The average audience per game was an estimated 34.7 million. The 15.9 rating was 13% higher than the record 14.1 for last season’s NBA Finals.

Sunday’s Game 6, in which the Lakers clinched the title, was the highest-rated daytime basketball game ever, including college. It drew a 17.3 rating with a 43 share of the audience. The share meant 43% of the people watching television in the nation at the time were watching the game.
