In the Summer, Texans Are Fit to Be Un-Tied
Gov. Bill Clements urged Texans to shed their formal wear and adopt a more relaxed dress code Friday, proclaiming a statewide “No Tie Summer.”
In issuing the proclamation, Clements said it was “time to roll up our sleeves and devote our best energies to addressing the challenges facing our state.”
The proclamation, co-signed by Secretary of State Jack Rains, urges Texans to “enjoy the observance of a more relaxed dress code” by doffing neckties between Monday--the first day of the state Legislature’s special session--and Labor Day.
Clements suggested also that Texans not wear suit jackets and long-sleeved shirts while “the rigors of summer are upon us.”
He issued a similar proclamation during his first term in office.
“In states like New York, Colorado and Michigan, they can worry about being fashionable,” the governor said. “We in Texas are interested in being comfortable, and productive.”
Clements said that doing without neckties, coats and long-sleeved shirts will lead to less formality, in keeping with Texas traditions.
