“The Best of Leo Kottke.” Capitol. When Kottke ambled out of Minnesota in 1970, he brought a unique musical vocabulary to the 6- and 12-string acoustic guitars. Using the stylistic springboard of such folk and country predecessors as John Fahey, Chet Atkins and Merle Travis, Kottke also displayed classical refinement and sophistication as well as jazz improvisation and chord structure. This 15-song, CD-only collection, covering his 1971-76 period at Capitol, gives a good overview of his early career, though with only 40 minutes playing time it’s hardly exhaustive. Sound quality: excellent. ***
