They’re Not the Pets for Everyone

Share

Breeders emphasize that pit bulls are not the pets for everyone. Owners must be mature, responsible and willing to spend considerable time socializing the animal, caring for it and training it.

Too often, breeders say, people will buy dogs without knowing anything about its bloodlines or will buy from disreputable breeders, practices that further promote the proliferation of dogs with bad temperaments and traits.

Here are some of their tips for finding a good dog:

- Attend shows and learn about the breed before buying. Find out who the reputable breeders are in the community.

- When shopping, ask to see the parents and grandparents of the dog. If they are not friendly and affectionate, beware of the pups. Watch out if the dogs are scarred; that is an indication that they likely have been used as fighters. Check with those who have bought dogs from a particular kennel to see if they are happy with the dogs they purchased.

- Beware of dogs that are inexpensive. Purebred dogs usually run anywhere from $200 to $500 or more. If they are registered with the American Kennel Club or United Kennel Club, chances of getting a purebred are better.
