WEEKEND TV : TALK OF POLITICS, DISEASE, TURMOIL

Weekends are playtime for most Americans, yet television is often at its most serious then with an abundance of public-affairs shows. This weekend brings discussions of the Reagan presidency, the future of the U.S. Supreme Court, AIDS and the political unrest in South Korea.

CBS’ “Sunday Morning” looks at the state of the Reagan Administration and assesses how much power it will wield in its final months (Sunday at 7:30 a.m., Channels 2 and 8). The program also visits an exhibit of Henry Moore sculptures in Tokyo and looks at folk dancing in the nation’s capital.

Secretary of State George Shultz visits NBC’s “Meet the Press” to discuss the turmoil in South Korea and other international trouble spots (Sunday at 9:30 a.m., Channels 4, 36 and 39), while CBS’ “Face the Nation” questions where the U.S. Supreme Court is headed in the wake of the resignation of Justice Louis Powell (Sunday at 4:30 p.m., Channel 2, and 11:30 p.m., Channel 8).

Locally, AIDS victim Paul Gann appears on “At Issue” to discuss AIDS testing with Helen Kushnick, a board member of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (Sunday at 3:30 p.m., Channel 2).

On a lighter note, KTLA Channel 5 is introducing a locally produced summer series at 9:30 p.m. Sunday called “Tomorrow Is Monday.” It’s an offbeat magazine show featuring music and looking at unusual aspects of life in Southern California, hosted by Eric Boardman.
