Friends and family of DeAndre Brown, the 9-year-old accidentally killed Wednesday in a gang gun battle in South-Central Los Angeles, have received numerous offers of financial help to pay for the boy’s funeral and burial.

Moreover, the state’s Victims Assistance Program said the family can collect up to $2,800 in assistance for funeral costs.

The boy’s natural mother, Margaret Sapp, 29, said Friday that three mortuaries have offered their services free of charge and many private individuals have asked to contribute to a trust fund the family is contemplating. The family said the contributions could be put into a trust fund for DeAndre’s three brothers and sisters.

An official at the boy’s school, Loren Miller Elementary School, said that 50 calls came in Friday from individuals and corporations wanting to make financial contributions. Shirley Dorsey, DeAndre’s foster mother and an aide at the school, said she hoped to use some of the contributions for a trust fund to educate children to stay away from gangs.
