Political extremist Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr., in his first public appearance in the United States in six months, said the AIDS crisis “is going to make me a national folk hero.” LaRouche, whose campaign committees have been charged in a $1-million credit card scam, estimated there are now 5 million AIDS cases, more than 100 times higher than the number reported by U.S. health officials. LaRouche, speaking in Rochester, N.H., called the existing treatment of AIDS inadequate and urged setting up isolated hospitals to care for victims. LaRouche is expected to appear voluntarily this week before a federal grand jury in Boston that indicted 13 of his associates in an obstruction of justice probe.
