Los Angeles Handicap : Bedside Promise Sets Record for 6 Furlongs at Hollypark

Bedside Promise took the sprint championship of the Hollywood Park meeting Saturday, winning the 34th running of the $79,950 Los Angeles Handicap.

The son of Honest Pleasure ran the six furlongs in 1:08 2/5, setting a track and course record. The old mark of 1:08 3/5 was set last year by Melair.

Bedside Promise was third until the stretch, when he responded to the urging of jockey Gary Stevens and drew out for a 1 3/4-length victory.

Bolder than Bold, ridden by Gary Baze, finished second, and Lincoln Park, with Chris McCarron aboard, was third. The favorite, Zabaleta, was fourth in the field of five.

The crowd of 26,112 sent Bedside Promise off at odds of 6-5 to pay $4.40, $3.60 and $2.80. Bolder Than Bold returned $4.80 and $2.80, and Lincoln Park paid $3.

The victory brought a purse of $46,200 to the Jawl Brothers of Victoria, Canada, and raised Bedside Promise’s earnings to more than $900,000.
