In something of a surprise move, Sedgwick County commissioners in Wichita, Kan., postponed an attempt to ban Motley Crue from performing at Kansas Arena on July 10 after the commissioners were advised they could be sued for violating the First Amendment, which guarantees free expression. The commission’s action at least temporarily frustrated a 20-month campaign by the Wichita chapter of the National Federation for Decency to persuade the county commission to ban musical groups the protesters consider obscene. The decency activists promised to continue the fight.
