The Soviet Union came from behind to win the men’s competition at the European Cup track and field meet Sunday, while the East Germans dominated the women’s events.

The Soviet men, who trailed after the first day of events at the Rosicky Stadium, rallied to win with 117 points, just 2 1/2 more than the East Germans.

The East German women won their division with 119 points, with the Soviet Union finishing a distant second with 92.

Linford Christie of Britain scored the only double of the meet. He won the men’s 200 meters in 20.63 seconds on Sunday after taking the 100 in 10.23 on Saturday.

The real show of the second day, however, was Francesco Panetta’s effort in the 3,000 meters steeplechase. The Italian led the entire way, hitting the tape with a margin of more than 50 meters, and clocking the fastest time in the world this year--8:13.47.

Britain took third place in the men’s standings with 99 points, followed by West Germany 88, Italy 87, Czechoslovakia 73, Spain 72 and Poland 58 1/2.

In the women’s competition, Bulgaria was third at 86, followed by West Germany 77, Britain 59 1/2, Czechoslovakia 51 1/2, and Poland and France, both 45.

There were no outstanding performances in the two days of competition, despite the presence for the first time this season of the cream of European track. Two months from the world championships in Rome in late August, many competitors were clearly not at their best.

The East German women had significant victories with Silke Gladisch taking the women’s 200 meters in 21.99 and world record-holder Heike Drechsler winning the long jump with a leap of 23-10.

Cornelia Oschkenat won the 100-meter hurdles in 12.47, beating world-record holder Jordanka Donkova of Bulgaria, who was second at 12.53.

In the two days, the East German women won 11 out of 16 events.
