A Los Angeles lawyer has pleaded no contest to two counts of conspiracy and 14 counts of grand theft for his involvement in an accident fraud ring that bilked the Southern California Rapid Transit District out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. J. Bruce Johnson, 40, was the last of five defendants to admit involvement in a scheme that defrauded the RTD of up to $100,000 a week by filing false insurance claims that, in some cases, involved non-existent victims. A plea of no contest differs from an admission of guilt, but has the same effect in criminal proceedings. Johnson will be sentenced Sept. 8.
