American League Roundup : Guidry Gets First Win, Beats Blue Jays, 4-0

Ron Guidry, with relief help from Tim Stoddard, won his first game of the season as the New York Yankees beat the Blue Jays, 4-0, Tuesday night at Toronto and increased their lead in the American League East to two games.

Willie Randolph and Gary Ward each knocked in two runs for the Yankees. Toronto has lost three in a row, its longest losing streak of the season.

Guidry (1-3) checked the Blue Jays on six singles in 7 innings, striking out nine and giving up only one walk before getting help from Stoddard.

In his previous four starts, Guidry had not lasted more than six innings.

In the first inning, Ward hit a run-scoring single to right to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Randolph increased the lead to 3-0 with a two-run double in the second inning, and Ward made it 4-0 with an RBI single in the fifth.

Seattle 5, Texas 2--Mark Langston threw a six-hitter and struck out 11, and John Moses drove in three runs at Arlington, Tex., as the Mariners snapped the Rangers’ five-game winning streak.

Langston (10-6) pitched his eigth complete game and increased his American League-leading strikeout total to 137.

Seattle took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on Moses’ two-run single and Phil Bradley’s RBI double. Moses knocked in the fifth Seattle run with a single in the seventh.

Minnesota 3, Kansas City 1--Kirby Puckett hit his 14th home run, and Bert Blyleven pitched a six-hitter over 8 innings to lead the Twins over the Royals at Kansas City and end a five-game losing streak.

The win extended Minnesota’s lead in the West to two games.

An error by shortstop Greg Gagne in the ninth inning allowed the Royals to score their only run. Blyleven (7-6) allowed six singles, struck out two and walked one. Jeff Reardon got the final out for his 16th save.

Blyleven did not allow a home run for only the second time in 18 starts this season.

Boston 13, Baltimore 9--Dwight Evans, Wade Boggs and Mike Greenwell keyed a 17-hit attack with home runs at Boston as the Red Sox beat the Orioles.

Boggs, going 3 for 3, boosted his major league-leading average to .391 with his 29th multi-hit game of the season.

Evans hit a three-run homer, his 13th, off Baltimore starter Mark Williamson (2-6) in the first inning.

The Orioles are 5-23 in June, the worst month in the club’s history.

Detroit 8, Milwaukee 5--Rookie Matt Nokes hit a two-run homer and Darrell Evans drove in two runs to lead the Tigers past the Brewers at Milwaukee.

The Tigers broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Kirk Gibson, a bases-loaded walk and Evans’ two-run double.

Dan Petry (5-4) gave up four runs on eight hits in 5 innings to get the victory, while Willie Hernandez pitched the last two innings to earn his fourth save. Mark Clear (5-3) took the loss.

Chicago 12, Oakland 3--Ivan Calderon’s two-run single capped a five-run fourth inning at Chicago to lead the White Sox over the A’s.

Rookie Mark McGwire gave the A’s an early lead when he hit a two-run homer in the first inning. It was McGwire’s sixth homer in the last four games and 28th of the season, giving him the major league lead.

Scott Nielsen (1-2) picked up his first victory, allowing six hits in eight innings.

In the sixth inning, Reggie Jackson knocked over a television camera in the dugout. Jackson, batting .208, returned to the dugout after grounding out, threw down his helmet, kicked a water cooler and then saw the television camera pointed at him.

Jackson pointed at the camera, then walked up to it and knocked it over. No one was injured.

“If you mess around with me in the dugout, you run the risk of having me kick your behind,” Jackson said after the game. Jackson said the dugout was his domain.
