A gas station attendant narrowly escaped a fiery death when he was tied up and locked in a back room by robbers who tried to burn the building before fleeing, police said Thursday.

The robbers took $500 from Texaco attendant Mohaned Musid at about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, tied him and left him in a back room at the station on El Camino Drive. Then they sprinkled gasoline around the building and started a fire, Costa Mesa police said.

Musid, 42, of Costa Mesa escaped the blaze with second-degree burns on his right arm. He was treated at Costa Mesa Medical Center Hospital and released Wednesday night.
